A Tired Sunday, Italian DII Update and the Start of the Work Week

Sunday, 7 April, 2019

After getting home from last night's game at 2:00 a.m. this morning and having a short, restless sleep due to the overtime nature of our loss, I was understandably a bit lethargic today.

I was bolstered in my melancholy by the knowledge that in only . . .

. . . more days our son Michael will
be in Varese for a week

And the countdowns continue . . .

Yesterday, before the game, I was invited next door to the Nardi home for lunch as it was . . .

I did not know that
Carbonara had a Day

But it does and it was yesterday, although the Giorgio Nardi insists that it is really Carbonara Weekend.

Who was I to argue?

On Saturday we had Giorgio hard at work in his kitchen making his amazing Carbonara sauce with fantastic risotto.

I was invited back again for lunch today to have some more of Giorgio's heavenly Carbonara sauce this time spread over spaghetti noodles.

SO GOOD!

And I'm still losing weight.

Giorgio told us all an interesting story at lunch on Saturday about traditional Carbonara sauce that makes it perhaps not as traditional an Italian dish as one would think.

According to Giorgio, Carbonara sauce has only been around for a little over 70 years.

His story about the origins of Carbonara sauce is that during World War II, while American GIs were liberating Italy from Fascist and Nazi rule, American and Italian culinary styles melded.

Apparently, during these hard war times everyone was short on food so GIs and Italians got together to try to remedy the situation.

The Italians, of course, had pasta to offer.

As for the GIs, they had K-rations.

Specifically the Americans had lots of both egg and ham and/or bacon K-rations and thus a new sauce, based on those American K-rations, was created and eventually added to Italian kitchens throughout the world!

A sauce so popular that now April 6th of every every year Italians dedicate to this flavorful sauce.

Over the years, more ingredients have been added to Carbonara sauces at the whim of individual chefs, all with the effort to make an even better Carbonara sauce.

I think that Giorgio may have perfected the recipe over the last two days!

Thank you Giorgio, Barbara, Federica and Raffaele for two outstanding meals.

When I finally had the energy this afternoon, I got back to work on HUDL looking at our game video from last night and also looking at video of our next opponent on Saturday night, the 2-1 Desio Hammers who we'll play at home with a scheduled 6:30 p.m. kickoff.

Now that all of the weekend's Italian DII games are in the books, let's take a look at how things are shaping up as many, but not all, teams have reached the halfway point in the eight game regular season.

Seven Italian DII games
