Family, Friends, Football and Flying Machines

Wed.-Sun., August 14-18, 2024

Another busy week of Summer activities to keep us on our toes to be sure.

We started with the sad reminder

Wednesday, August 15th would have been our mother's 100th birthday.

Even though she is no longer with us,
Laurie baked a cake in her honor

I had a fun, as always, meeting with two of my University of Washington Husky reprobates this week in beautiful downtown Glendale.

Paul Sabolić and Mark Johnson

Mark was in SoCal on business as his outfit might bespeaks while Paul was chilling in the heat.

I was chilling too, as Paul led me
to a relaxed California vibe

It is always a treat to see them, but I wish that we could have met for a longer period before Mark had to head off to his business meeting.

Work gets in the way of fun way too often.

Since I was far from home, after the meeting I headed over to Pasadena's Roma Market on North Lake Avenue to pick up one of their outstanding Italian sub sandwiches for lunch.

I drove to San Marino's signature
park to eat my lunch on a shady bench

Lacy Park is HUGE!

Back when I was in high school we had a huge two day rain storm. Somehow the drain in the middle of this field got plugged and for the next few days we had a gigantic Lake Lacy in which to frolic. It covered most of what you see in this photo.

That was a fun, a remembered time indeed.

After my one man picnic, I drove by our old home to see if the new owners had made changes but it was status quo from my street view.

GijĂłn Mariner Elea ending
a Pilgrimage

Elea is one of our Mariners linemen who just walked a 27 Km/17 miles pilgrimage on the Canary Islands to the Shrine of the Virgin of Candelaria in Tenerife.

Once he arrived, he hoisted his Mariners game jersey and asked the Virgin Mary to watch over the GijĂłn team in 2025 and help us to our best season ever.

Sounds GREAT to me!

Congratulations Elea!

Laurie and I met up with Paul and Joanne Sabolić at Cronies Sports Grill in Agoura before attending the El Camino Real H.S. at Oak Park H.S. scrimmage.

Paul and Joanne's son Jason is the Head Football Coach at El Camino Real H.S.

Oak Park about to hit an open WR

Good to see El Camino Real looking better at this point than they have the last two years when they scrimmaged Oak Park.

El Camino Real, 4-7 in 2023, opens the new season at Kennedy H.S., who was 8-3 last year, in Granada Hills on Friday at 7:00 p.m.

Saturday was picture day for
Jacob and the Camarillo Stingers

Our friends Jeff and Grace Festerling's
son Camden had his first game on Saturday

Camden plays for the El Rio Spartans Midgets team but is far from being a midget. He is a big lineman who was quite physical on this hot Saturday afternoon at Rio Mesa H.S.

The Oxnard Panthers dominated
the El Rio Spartans on Opening Day

Still, the Spartans had their moments to build on as they simply need to start eliminating some of their mistakes at practice this week.

In Sweden, our former club, the
Wäsby Warriors, lost to Stockholm's
A.I.K. team

Another win for Coach Michael Wood

Our Europe Warriors Men's team beat the University of Chihuahua, 19-10, on August 18, 2018.

With Los Angeles 2028 Olympics introducing Flag Football to the Games, things are heating up in international flag football circles.

Week 13 of ELF play
is in the books

A full slate of contests

For once, an Overtime thriller

This game was as good as anticipated with lots of playoff implications. Paris (9-2) makes the playoffs while Madrid (7-4) will need help to get into the six team post-season tournament.

No surprise here as Tirol (8-3)
romps past Milano (3-8), the Raiders
can still make the playoffs

Another patented ELF blowout,
Vienna (12-0) over hapless
Ferhérvár (2-9)

Munich (8-3) still has playoffs hopes
after throttling Helvetic (1-10)

Wroclaw (5-6) with a much needed
win over Frankfurt (4-7)

Another GREAT Barcelona Dragons
pre-game poster!

But it did not help, Stuttgart (10-1)
slays Barcelona (2-9)

In their last six games, Barcelona has been outscored 357 to 7. That includes one game where the Dragons were down 54-0 at the Halftime and refused to take the field in the Second Half.

Oh my, a close one as Cologne (5-6)
edged Hamburg (2-9)

One final lopsided game, as
Rhein (11-1) routs Berlin (5-7)

Overall view of the Week 13 results

Two games decided by one score and six games won by 25 or more points. Something really has to change for the ELF to sustain interest and credibility in the future.

The ELF standings with one week
left in the regular season

What the playoffs look like
with one game to go

#1 seed Vienna Vikings
Eastern Conference Champions (12-0)

ELF#2 or #3 seed Rhein Fire
Western Conference Champions (11-1)

#2 or #3 seed Stuttgart Surge
Central Conference Champions (10-1)

#4 seed Paris Musketeers (9-2)

#5 seed Tirol Raiders (8-3)

#6 seed Munich Ravens (8-3)

In the hunt, Madrid Bravos (7-4)

The final seeding for spots two through six are all up for grabs in this week's upcoming games.

European League of Football
Week 14 Games
Saturday, August 24, 2024
Madrid (7-4) at Hamburg (2-9)
Stuttgart (10-1) at Helvetic (1-10)
Cologne (5-6) at Fehérvár (2-9)
Barcelona (2-9) at Milano (3-8)

Sunday, August 25, 2024
Tirol (8-3) at Munich (8-3)
Paris (9-2) at Frankfurt (4-7)
Wroclaw (5-6) at Prague (1-10)

ELF Week 14 Byes
Vienna (12-0), Rhein (11-1)
and Berlin (5-7)

Although I foresee five blowouts again this week, the Tirol Raiders at Munich Ravens should be a good one with the winner clinching a playoff berth. The Raiders won the Week 4 contest between the two Central Conference strong boys, 29-26.

The loser of the Raiders-Ravens game will probably looking at a tiebreaker with the Madrid Bravos who are a heavy favorite over Hamburg who they beat 52-6 in Week 11. Madrid did not play either Tirol or Munich this season.
