Not Much to Report From a Lazy Few Days

Tues.-Fri., January 16-19, 2024
A quiet few days overall for us which was OK by me.

After raving about the movie The Boys in the Boat to Jacob and Michael, they both went to see it after school on Tuesday.

Popcorn at the ready and in full
Husky colors, Jacob went in

It looks like they liked it
as much as we did

They both started reading the book on Thursday.

In one fun point in the movie the Husky crew team sang the UW Fight Song, Bow Down to Washington, a cappella style.

Jacob was chagrined to admit that he did not know the words to the song.

Here you are, Jacob

A flaw in The Boys in the Boat was no
mention of this infamous Husky hangout

Just because Dante's didn't open until about 30 years after the 1936 Husky crew team's exploits was no reason to not include it in my opinion.

It would have been a simple case of "Hollywood dramatic license" as Paul Sobolić would say.

Speaking of the Huskies . . .

The BIG-10 for the Huskies
in 2024 will be interesting

The 2024 UW football schedule
has lots of new challenges

Not the least of these is the Huskies' need for quality players to fill out its roster as defections for graduation, retirement, NFL opt outs and Transfer Portal entrants continue to wreak havoc on the team.

We still had lots of cleats to give
away to needy teams

The only problem was that we only had shoes in sizes 13.5 to 18 left. We had disposed of all of the smaller sized shoes to Bart Iaccarino's team in Italy and to Pacifica and Del Sol High Schools. What to do?

Why not contact former Ventura County Star sportswriter Rhiannon Potkey who currently works in the Athletic Department at the University of Tennessee. She has started a program called Goods 4 Greatness that distributes athletic gear to needy students on the east coast.

We packed two boxes with
21 pairs of new Nike cleats

It took Rhiannon about two hours to find a team that was financially strapped and could use huge cleats.

The cleats were off to the HBCU
Delaware State Hornets

I had visited Delaware State with three other California coaches about 40 years ago to talk Wing-T football concepts with their most helpful coaching staff.

We saw first hand what Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCU) were up against systemically and financially.

It felt good to ship them the cleats.

GO HORNETS!

Wednesday night at the Las Colinas
Middle School gym for an Orange practice

Jacob running down another loose ball

Jacob skying for a rebound

His passion, energy and effort are good to see every time he steps on the court.

I shared this with Jacob and he
thought it made a lot of sense

We keep trying to teach him old school values in a new school world.

Random notes from the net . . .

Just like in the 1950s and 1960s,
many Rams players are now turning
to the world of WWE in the off-season

Some Cuban-Americans too

I may need to move to Texas
if this is true

Nice idea, but too expensive

Who does when you get
right down to it?

Truer with every passing day

Oh my . . .

I have my moments

I try, I TRULY try!

Also truer with every passing day

Sage advice

I'm raising BOTH hands on this one

Something to think about
to be sure

Four more games scheduled
this weekend in Week #2 of
Spain's top level, Serie A

This weekend looms to be a good one, stay tuned.
