A Contreras Bowl Update and Delicious Bread

Thursday-Friday, October 1-2, 2020

A few months ago I announced that after some family discussions we had agreed that it was finally time for me to stop coaching full six to nine month seasons of American football in Europe.

About a week after making that announcement I was asked to join in on a conference call purportedly to discuss items concerning the December Europe Warriors Women's game in Barcelona against Team USA.

The two men asking me to join them in this conference call were . . .

. . . Julien Urgenti who was our
GM when I coached the
Bron-Villeurbanne Falcons in
Lyon, France in 2012-13 and . . .

. . . Bart Iaccarino who is
one of the founding fathers of the
highly successful Europe Warriors project

I first met Bart when I was coaching the Murcia Cobras in Spain's second division in 2015. Bart was the Head Coach of the powerhouse Reus Imperiales who would go undefeated that season in route to the Spanish DII National Championship.

Bart currently is the Head Coach of Barcelona's DI Pioners L'Hospitalet.

Their conference call's agenda was a complete ruse!

What they had decided to do was organize a "Contreras Bowl" as they called it to also be played in Barcelona the weekend before our Women's game in late November. They wanted to open it up to all of the coaches and players that I have come in contact with since starting my high school coaching career in 1970 and my EuroBall career back in 2008 with Sicily's Catania Elephants.

Thus we could potentially have people from France, Italy, Spain, Sweden and Switzerland in attendance. Based on my coaching players from all over the European continent as well as from Canada, Mexico and the United States through the Europe Warriors could take part in this fun weekend.

I was excited to see a lot of good friends over an adult beverage or twelve during what could be an amazing weekend hard by Spain's Costa Brava.

Then Covid-19 got in the way.

First, the pandemic forced the cancellation of our Women's game. Then about a week later we all agreed that it would be best to postpone the Contreras Bowl until next Summer at the earliest.

It will still be a fun, exciting weekend sometime in the future.

Bread . . .

I LOVE bread!

We have an outstanding bakery in Camarillo, the Café Ficelle, that, while not cheap, is truly the baker of amazing breads that remind us of the great ones in Europe that have been the staple of our diets for the last dozen years.

This sourdough loaf is
ADDICTIVE!

Their baguettes are quite good as well while the croissants are both delicious and huge.

Great place!

Our Thursday dinner included
Laurie's fantastic garlic bread
made from the Café Ficelle baguette

Finally, today's news from the internet after the announcement that President Trump and his wife have tested positive for the Coronavirus . . .

Ouch!

DOUBLE OUCH!!
