A Good Week on MANY Levels

Wednesday-Tuesday, October 7-13, 2020

There are lots of positive tidbits to report this week, let's start with some fantastic news from Varese, Italy.

The Varese Skorpions announced our
new Head Coach for the 2021 season

The Skorpions new leader is veteran
DI college coach Nick Holt

This is simply an amazing hire for the Skorpions as Coach Holt is an experienced coach with a background on the defensive side of the ball. The Skorpions will find Coach Holt to be both intense and inspiring, he'll be the correct choice to move the Varese team to the next level of excellence this coming campaign.

After graduating from the University of the Pacific in 1985, Coach Holt started his coaching career in 1986 as the DC at Stockton, CA's St. Mary's H.S.

In 1987, Coach Holt embarked on the typically nomadic life of a college football coach. His first stop was the University of Nevada-Las Vegas for three seasons coaching their Defensive Line.

In 1990, he was off to the University of Idaho to serve in several roles over eight seasons. With the Vandals he coached the DL, LBs and was the DC as well.

In 1998, he moved to Louisville for three seasons to work as the Cardinals DL coach.

The 2001 season saw another move, this time to work as USC's DL Coach for three years. In 2003, the 11-1 Trojans won the National Championship.

In 2004, Coach Holt returned to the University of Idaho, this time as their Head Coach for two seasons.

The 2006 season saw him return to USC as DL coach and and as DC for another three seasons.

Ever on the move, the 2009 campaign saw him become the Assistant HC and DC with the Washington Huskies.

In 2012, his journey continued as the Recruiting Coordinator for the Arkansas Razorbacks.

Eager to get back on the sidelines, the 2013 season saw him become the the Assistant HC and DC at Western Kentucky. He would eventually become the Hilltoppers Interim HC in 2016.

His final stop before coming to Italy was as the Purdue Boilermakers co-DC and LB Coach from 2017-19.

That is a remarkable resume for the newest HC of the Varese Skorpions!

This was a BEAUTIFUL day for
Skorpions American football!

I had some fun interaction with one of my former club's in Spain this week as well.

Spain's ever lovable DIII juggernaut!

Guadalajara is located about 30 miles northeast of Madrid. I helped coach the Stings' players solely on their fundamentals for two months at the end of 2016.

The Stings' Alejandro Altisent sent me a package on behalf of the club this week.

It was a cool new Stings jersey!

The Stings have a special
place in my heart!

I have had so many great experiences coaching American football overseas but the two months with the Stings was just a tad more rewarding than any other that I've had.

I think it was because this club operated at an extremely low level, grass roots level. They were a lot of fun to coach thanks to their extreme eagerness to learn.

I even found my name on
the back of the jersey!

GRACIAS STINGS!

The weekend was devoted to college and NFL football.

This is CRAZY!

After previously undefeated Florida's 41-38 road loss to Texas A&M, Gators HC Dan Mullen clamored for the University of Florida to open its gates to its stadium, The Swamp, to a capacity crowd of 90,000 maniacal fans packing the stands for this week's game against LSU.

This is CRAZIER!

Football photos on the internet . . .

The Denver Broncos 1960
throwback uniforms

I wonder if they were inspired by the famed Calcio Storico uniforms used annually ion Florence, Italy?

See what I mean with these
vertical stripes

Which got me to thinking about Europe . . .

Paris is always inviting

As are Italian lunches

Oranges everywhere in Italia
Especially blood oranges

The Duomo in Milan was
always of interest

That got us dipping some excellent
bread in Blood Orange olive oil mixed
with delicious fig balsamic vinegar

I know that Italians do not do this, but they should.

The Dodgers swept by the
San Diego Padres and now
take on te Atlanta Braves

The Braves won the first game of the best of seven series yesterday by a score 0f 5-1. The Dodgers will try to even the series later today.

Orestes "Minnie" Miñoso
The Cuban Comet

He played baseball the way God intended it to be played.

This showed up on the internet

As a young man, going to the original Tommy's shack at the corner of Rampart and Beverly in Los Angeles after the bars closed was a MUST.

Nothing like a couple of greasy chili cheese burgers at 2:00 a.m.

This FOUR overtime Red River Rivalry
game was a CORKER!

The grandkids came over to our home on Saturday to help decorate the inside for Halloween.

The Great Pumpkin and Mary

Mary likes being a witch

Where did we ever get these
Goo-Goo-Googly Eyes?

Mary opted for a sleepover which meant that Sunday morning we had pancakes to make.

Mary donned one of Laurie's
aprons for the occasion

She did a FABULOUS job stirring
in all of our secret ingredients chock
full of essential nutrients

Mary made a great catch with
her plate of the traditional flip of the
"First Pancake of the Day"

The 3-1 Los Angeles Rams traveled
to Washington D.C. to take on the
1-3 team formerly known as the
Native Americans, sort of

At halftime Mike, Mary
and I went for a wee stretch
of the legs around the block

For some reason, Mary loves
racing up and down all of our
neighbors' front steps

The Rams won to improve to 4-1 but . . .

Our four wins have come against the four teams from the NFC East that have a combined record of 4-15-1.

The NFC East is made up of the 2-3 Dallas Cowboys, the 1-3-1 Philadelphia Eagles, the 1-4 Washington Football Team and the 0-5 New York Giants.

Our only loss is to the 4-0 Buffalo Bills who play tonight.

Well, at least we are beating the teams that we should be defeating.

Up next for the Rams are the 2-3 San Francisco 49ers.

From my days growing up in a
Cuban family this was 100% TRUE!

Time to get a bit serious . . .

The question is not do you "believe"
in science, rather it should be
do you "understand" science

I found this to be spot on as well

OK, it was time to cast our
2020 ballots after careful
consideration and discussion

Laurie and I both cast our ballots
at this official drop box outside
of Camarillo's City Hall this morning

There are four official drop boxes for early voters like this one in the City of Camarillo and another 30 of these official drops boxes scattered strategically throughout Ventura County.

That's a total of 34 official drop boxes in Ventura County.

Meanwhile, the Republican Governor of Texas, in a transparent voter suppression move, has pushed for only one official drop box in each county in his state.

Fortunately, the courts have said no to his despicable political machinations.

That little sticker makes it
OFFICIAL!

I believe America is in serious need of a change.

Draw your own conclusions . . .
