First Football Weekend Home

Now that I'm back in California, it was finally time for my first genuine American football weekend of the 2010 season.

We started the festivities at Rio Mesa H.S. on Friday night as the Spartans hosted the Buena Bulldogs. I was joined by. . .

Ryan Bolland and Mike Contreras

That's Mike's shadow as he takes the picture. Mike's Hueneme J.V. team had a bye this week.

Ryan is heavily rumored to be going back to Sweden next year as the Head Coach of the new Kristianstad Predators Senior team. They are still in negotiations but no contract has been officially tendered. Stay tuned for updates.

More information on the Kristianstad situation can be found at

This game was special for me as I coached football teams at Rio Mesa for 18 years and at Buena for three years. It was at Buena in the early 2000's that I coached Ryan.

The game was entertaining but in the end, the Bulldogs proved to be the better team as they cruised to a 32-17 win.

One of the Bulldogs key players was WR, #25, Brad Wellman a Sophomore who had several nice catches and picked up a key first down on a reverse in the fourth quarter. His father, Glenn, was one of the best runningbacks I ever coached. He went on to play at the University of Arizona. Glenn's daughter is also in this picture.

The Bulldogs (3-3) now enter Channel League play against their cross-town rival Ventura Cougars on Friday.

The Spartans (2-3) play the Oxnard Yellowjackets next Friday to open the Pacific View League portion of their schedule.

Saturday was college game after college game all day and evening on TV.

The Washington Huskies (2-3, 1-1 PAC-10), coming off of their big win vs. USC last weekend, got manhandled by the Arizona State Sun Devils (3-3, 1-2) 24-14. The Huskies host Oregon State (3-2, 2-0) next Saturday.

Jason Johnson continues to enjoy his maiden season of coaching. His Pacific Lutheran Lutes (4-0, 2-0 NWC) pounded the Whitworth Pirates (3-3, 1-1) 39-21. Up next for the Lutes is a trip to the San Francisco Bay area to play the Menlo Oaks (3-3).

Finally, on Sunday it was over to the Fujita's home to watch Scott's Cleveland Browns host the Atlanta Falcons in a 10:00 a.m. game. Helen made a great breakfast for us to enjoy at halftime. Once again, the Browns (1-4) lack of production at the QB position hurt them as they lost to the Falcons (4-1) 20-10.

Up next for the Browns are the 3-1 Pittsburgh Steelers coming off of their bye week and with QB Ben Roethlisberger back in the line up for the first time this season.

The fun begins again this coming Friday!

They are brothers indeed.

Gary must be the one that played at USC then...correct? He ran as fast as I did...woot woot!!!

Hueneme Frosh team at Cam High this Thursday if you're interested. My oldest son is a WR for them and should see a great amount of playing time in this game.

Saturday at Rio Mesa, I think at 10 AM, my J2Gold team plays Santa Paula....big game for us. I'm the D-Coordinator for that team and my middle boy plays for me. It's there if you want to come by.
