A Full Day of Exploring São Paulo on Foot and By Metro and Bus

Monday, December 9, 2024

When I finally awoke this morning after a great night of sleep, I was stunned to find that . . .

. . . the 7-6 Los Angeles Rams shocked the
10-3 Buffalo Bills while I was in a coma

The Rams have now climbed up to second place in the NFC West, one game behind the Seattle Seahawks.

The Bills are still sit alone atop of the AFC East standings a full four games ahead of the Miami Dolphins.

Sunday's step total was NOT a good one

I'll try to make up for it today.

I thought that a nutritious breakfast would be a good way to start the day.

After checking out my Fodor's guidebook, the restaurant that I needed was an obvious choice as it was located about 75 meters around the corner from our hotel's front door, the Estadão Bar & Lanches.

This was the spot for a quick, inexpensive dining experience that is open 24 hours a day and started out as a greasy spoon by all accounts.

The reason for their now 40+ years of prosperous operation is their famous, succulent pernil sandwiches with generous portions of roast pork.

LOTS of roast pork ready to serve

It was quite clean, not a greasy spoon at all

A quick look at the menu led to . . .

. . . this amazing pernil sandwich with
provolone cheese for added flavor

Those pieces of savory pork skin atop the pernil sandwich were an added bonus that made this meal even more memorable.

This glass of Açai berry juice was excellent

This Brazilian super berry is loaded with antioxidants, I felt peppier in seconds.

After consuming this Brazilian Breakfast of Champions, I was ready to explore.

I found it interesting that I could walk
right down the middle of these street
craft booths without stopping

It's fantastic the things one is capable of on their own.

I entered the Theatro Municipal

It had elegant decor to be sure

Even their outdoor portico was fancy

I inquired about buying tickets to any event here the next three nights and was told that the Theatro was dark tonight but that a circus act was playing Tuesday night at 8:00 p.m., addmission gratis.

I got one of the last 25 or so tickets still available. All of my seat options were in the nose bleed upper balcony area but again, free is a good price.

Thanks to the aid of a young lady working this morning at our hotel's main desk, I had her hand written directions on how to navigate the São Paulo Metro and Bus systems to get to the art village of Embu das Artes.

My first venture into the São Paulo
Metro system started here

I found the station to be clean
and, at this time, quite empty

Again, no morning rush hour

Nutty Bavarians in Brazil, why not?
I rode the Metro all the way
to this bus terminal

The state run bus was again neat,
clean and efficient

This was my trip destination, the
small art colony of Embu das Artes

Unfortunately, it was a Monday and a rainy Monday at that. While a great destination on the weekend, today I found most things closed.

More Açai berry concoctions

Of course they had the mandatory
graffiti art mural and it was a good one

A couple of locals that found
shelter from the rain

Artsy motorcycle

A nice balcony garden

Simple pleasures
As I headed back to São Paulo
on the bus, I saw this

Do Koreen FitzGerald and her Indianapolis cousins have a now not so secret time share in São Paulo?

The afternoon Metro rush was in
full effect when I got back to the city
A bold and dashing fashion
statement in the Metro station

Instead of going back to the hotel, I got off of the Metro at the Paulista station.

I was at the intersection of
two of São Paulo's best streets

I opted to concentrate on Avenida Paulista which was originally the site of the homes of São Paulo's upper crust.

Today it is mostly made up of posh hotels, banking centers and upper end shopping.

Able to leap tall buildings. . .

Avenida Paulista today consists of an eight lane street with this protected bike lane where I'm standing in the middle and lots of impressive edifices.

Imposing

Funky

Now, THAT'S a MacDonald's!

One simply has to impress if you are operating on Avenida Paulista.

Nice chandelier

I went into this opulent MacDonald's as a U.N. Observer keeping my travel vow of not eating at American chain restaurants in foreign lands.

Getting ready for the Holidays

Lots of tall buildings indeed!

I liked the oversized Christmas lights

Reflections

Colorful steps leading to an
AM/FM radio station

The bigger the better on this street

The Museo de Arte de São Paulo

Known locally as MASP, it houses lots of fabulous art as one would suspect. It is closed on Mondays but has free entry on Tuesdays.

I'll be back tomorrow.

Father and daughter at the
entrance to Parque Trianon

This lush, tree dense park is located across the street from the MASP. I found it to be quite relaxing and a break from the sultry weather.

What is that?

A mythical faun in the park

A run down mansion dating back
to the days when financial barons
called Avenida Paulista home

Next to the Italian Consulate was . . .

. . . a gelateria

Not much of a surprise if you think about it.

I would not want to be wearing
a Santa Claus outfit in this weather

Blue

An photo shoot amid the
traffic, why not strike a pose?

Before returning home to the hotel, I did wander a few blocks down Rua Augusta and bought a some trinkets to bring home as presents.

I opted to cut my walk short at this point with the promise to return to Rua Augusta again in the next two days.

When I got off the Metro near my
hotel, I found an open air fashion
show in full swing down this runway

I'm looking forward to the circus acts
at the Theatro Municipal tomorrow

I wonder if this dungeon is
still in use by the local judiciary

Today was a much more productive day

Finally . . .

. . . all of the bowl games now
have participants including the
Tony The Tiger Sun Bowl

If you are not in the 12-team College Football Playoff, do any of these bowl games really matter any more?

The Independence Bowl is a key example.

AAC Champion Army (11-1) is set to play Sun Belt Champion Marshall (10-3) in the Independence Bowl.

It sounded like a good matchup until it was announced that Marshall's Head Coach, Charles Huff, had resigned right after winning the conference championship game to take the job at Sun Belt Conference rival Southern Mississippi (1-11).

As a result, it was reported that most of the Marshall football team entered the Transfer Portal on Monday.

Given the circumstances, will there be an Independence Bowl this year.

Adventure looms on Tuesday, stay tuned . . .
