It Was a GREAT Day for a Walking Tour of São Paulo

Tuesday, December 10, 2024

Time was running out on my week in São Paulo so I decided to cover a lot of ground today.

It started with a Metro ride to the Luz station.

Good call in a Metro stop,
but no obrigado

On my walk from the Metro to . . .

. . . the Estação de Luz train station

It was busy

The tranquil Parque Jardim da Luz
across the street from the train station

An interesting old band stand

A Tropical Christmas, hmmmm . . .

While walking about this week in the hot and humid weather, I found it confusing to hear shops playing traditional Christmas songs in English with references to the snow and cold weather that is the norm in the Northern Hemisphere during the Holiday Season.

A Brazilian manger scene with way
cooler animals than the ones in Bethlehem

Industrial strength see-saws

A Christmas Carol
Brazilian style

Pleasing Christmas Past

Horrific Christmas Future

A redeemed Ebenezer doing the
ecologically right thing

A different take on Christmas but I liked it.

The Parque also had art . . .

. . . and HUGE trees

One of the things that I like to do on these vacations to big cities is walk around trying to absorb as many of the sights and sounds of what day-to-day life is like for the citizenry.

Motorcycle Parking Lot

Mercado Municipal

I was nearby, so I stopped in again.

What is this mystery fruit?

Lots of Christmas related
items were for sale on this block

"Sherwin Williams Paints
Cover the World"

Nothing that a few buckets of their fine paint couldn't fix.

Headless man in the boat,
a naked woman being covered

It all made perfect sense to me.

Nice native headdress

Lots of hustle and bustle today

I walked into a church

The BVM was there

A colorful native image as I headed
into the Asian Liberdade District

If my Mother was still alive, I
would have bought her this fan
for her vast collection

Sounds like a good time to be had
at night in Liberdade!

Sounds both mysterious and mystical

I finally arrived at the History
Museum of Japanese Immigration
to Brazil

It was a good one.

Traditional Samurai Battle Dress

Immigration numbers by
Japanese provinces

Brazil is right there!

One large kimono

This part of the museum was fascinating

It told the story of what occurred to Brazil's Japanese community during World War II.

Brazil would eventually join the Allies fighting the three Axis powers.

There were no internment camps as in the USA, but there was prejudiced intrigue to be sure with attacks on the Japanese immigrants, infighting within the Japanese community over who was owed their loyalties and Japanese-Brazilians joining the Brazilian armed forces fighting in Italy.

Complicated, convoluted but interesting to be sure.

This museum was well worth the visit.

Now it was on to the Museo de Arte de São Paulo, a.k.a., MASP.

They had a nice collection that
was well displayed

A boy having artistic fun

I just liked the colors

Modigliani

Goya

A sleeping archer

Velázquez

El Greco

MASP had a small collection on display but it covered a lot of different artists and styles.

It was well worth the trip.

Time to head back to the hotel to freshen up before tonight's performance at the Theatro Municipal.

This bar is just a long block
from the Theatro Municipal

I decided to NOT go there for a drink after the performance.

Who knew?

The Theatro Municipal was ablaze
in light when I arrived

Our fairy greeter was
about eight feet tall

The crowd was arriving

The building itself was
MAGNIFICENT!

Bare breasted women of strength

My view from the nose bleed section

Our performers tonight call themselves Mina and was an all-woman troop of acrobats, jugglers, balancing acts, singers and dancers using a Cirque de Soleil style approach to the circus arts during their two hour, non-stop performance.

No lions or tigers were present.

Swinging on ropes to start the night

The young lady in the middle was attached to her rope by only her hair!

I love and admire jugglers

Mina taking a group bow after
an outstanding performance!

Although I had already made the decision to avoid the Bar Sodom after the show, I was still a tad parched and hungry as well.

Another tasty pernil sandwich at
Estadão Bar & Lanches was perfect!

A glass of Brahma chopp beer slaked my thirst.

I was ready for bed after a long day.

WHOA!

I said that I was going to cover a lot of ground today and I did.
