A Thursday Edition of Friday Night Lights in Ventura

Thursday, September 26, 2024
It was a BEAUTIFUL night for American football, so son Michael and I headed up the 101 Freeway to the seaside town of Ventura to see a high school game.

For me, I would be the 13th game that I've attended this season.

Our game of choice was an
all cats affair

Newbury Park H.S. Panthers
4 Wins - 0 Losses
at

Ventura H.S. Panthers
2 Wins - 2 Losses

The game was being played at
Ventura H.S.'s Larrabbee Stadium . . .

. . . on Turner Field

As I said, it was a BEAUTIFUL
night for American football!

It was great to see one of our former
Rio Mesa H.S. athletes at the game

Diego Renteria has become an excellent referee who now does both high school and collegiate games.

The game view from the home stands

It was competitive in the First Quarter

Not so much in the Second Quarter.

I think that this might be a one
on one physical mismatch

One of the great guys in the
Ventura County sports scene

Joe Curley is the always positive, enthusiastic sports writer for the Ventura County Star newspaper.

Joe Curley's game night notepad

Joe's cipher is nearly impossible to understand. He is like a Navajo Code Talker when it comes to his personalized game notes.

I wonder if the people at England's Bletchley Park could break his code. It would be their greatest achievement since breaking the Nazi's Enigma Machine code in World War II.

Newbury Park led 36-0 at the half

With Verne Merrill who I coached
at Thousand Oaks H.S. fifty years ago

Verne and his lovely bride, Deb, were visiting the son's family from their home in Maui.

It was great to see them both.

Is anybody going to cover these
two Panthers running short routes?

Despite the score and to their credit,
Ventura kept battling in the Second Half

As is usual at these events,
Michael and I had a great time

FINAL SCORE
Newbury Park Panthers (5-0) - 43
Ventura Cougars (2-3) - 14
