A Birthday, Father's Day and a Slew of EuroBall Scores

Sat. & Sun., June 15-16, 2024
We had an action packed weekend full of lots of joy and more than a little drama.

Let's start with a fun birthday celebration at Ric's Restaurant and Sports Lounge in Camarillo on Saturday.

Debi Murphy, seen here with her
son Tim, was celebrating her
35th birthday for the second time

Laurie and I both enjoyed reconnecting
with many of Debi's friends and family

Even the young amongst us
loved the celebration mood

After a few hours at this fun party, it was time to head home as son Andrew and grandson Kevin were due to arrive at our home after the long drive from their Las Vegas home.

Unfortunately, it was a longer drive than normal which led to our evening's drama.

After getting on the road, Andrew realized that he was starting the painful process of passing a kidney stone. Unfortunately, this was not his first rodeo when it comes to kidney stones.

Andrew and Kevin stopped three or four times while driving for Andrew to walk around a bit in an effort to relieve the pain that sitting for long periods while passing a kidney stone brings to the table. Since Kevin is only 12, his driving for a bit was not an option.

When they finally arrived in Camarillo in the late afternoon, Laurie was able to obtain some pain relieving medication for him and he rallied for a time.

Vanessa, Mary, Jacob and Michael joined us for dinner courtesy of Bobbi's Mexican Food Restaurant take-out and, yes, tacos were miraculously involved.

After sharing some good family time and the East Camarillo branch of the family gone, we all settled into bed for the night.

Or so we thought.

At about 1:15 a.m. on Sunday, Andrew was knocking on our bedroom door. Based on his previous kidney stone experiences, the pain had reached the DEFCON 1 level, i.e., nuclear war was imminent.

Thus Andrew and I started our shared Father's Day at Camarillo's St. John's Hospital's Emergency Room.

After two hours, he appeared much better as the pain had subsided due to the wonders of modern medicine but the kidney stone had still not passed.

The decision had been made by the ER doctor to admit him into the hospital and I went back home alone at about 3:45 a.m.

At about 8:00 a.m., we got the word that Andrew was still in the ER as all of the hospital's beds were occupied and thus he could not be admitted.

By the time we got to the ER again, we were greeted by a much happier son as the kidney stone had finally passed. Now, as no further need of hospitalization, Andrew was released from their care.

On to a Father's Day chock full of family fun!

Cousins Jacob and Kevin
were primed for the revelry

While we normally are extremely conservation conscious in our daily lives, but today we said, "SCREW IT!"

Let the backyard water games
BEGIN!

Our new water slide from Target
was the star of the afternoon

Fun for kids of all ages

It was a PERFECT day for
a dip in the pool

WHEEEEEEE!

Though Kevin had trouble acclimating to the "cold" Camarillo weather after the summer heat of Las Vegas, he was having fun in the water.

Mary about to attack Jacob

Getting dangerous?

Right after this, Mary said,
"Poppo, come join me"

How could I possibly say no to her?

Next thing that I knew,
I was under attack!

I must sat that it really was a lot of fun.

Vanessa's panoramic photo of the
day's events included Michael twice

The water logged cousins were all
content as they enjoyed ice cream
after a day in the Sun

It turned out to be a wonderful Father's Day after all.

On to American football . . .

Los Angeles Rams legendary DE
David "Deacon" Jones was named the
16th all-time best player in NFL history

He wasn't the only Ram on this Top 100 list, there were three more L.A. greats mentioned.

DT Merlin Olsen who played next
to the Deacon came in at #30

RB Eric Dickerson at #40

Of course, I was ecstatic to see
Crazylegs make it at #94

I must say that recently retired Rams' DT Aaron Donald not making this list surprised me.

Meanwhile, there were a lot of important games played in EuroBall over the last two days.

We'll start with Italy's DI Semifinals

On Saturday, the 8-0 Varese Skorpions
hosted the 6-3 Parma Panthers

Even though the Skorpions were the #1 seed, I did not feel good about this game against the #4 seeded and defending IFL Champion Panthers.

Damn, my gut feeling was correct

After watching the game video, the Panthers dominated the game much more than the score indicated.

Sunday's other DI Semifinal saw the
#2 seeded Firenze Guelfi (6-2) at home
against the #3 Seeded Ancona Dolphins (7-2)

A comfortable win by the Guelfi

The 2024 Italian Bowl is now set . . .

#2 Seed Firenze Guelfi (7-2) vs.
#4 Seed Parma Panthers (7-3)

The Italian DII Wild Card games were also held this weekend.

The 7-1 Ferrara Aquile faced
the 5-3 Torino Reapers

Ferrara won as expected

The 6-2 Padova Saints hosted
the 5-3 Modena Vipers

Overtime win on the road for the Vipers

Next up are the DII Silver Bowl
Semifinals games

Modena Vipers (6-3) at Savona Pirates (8-0)
Ferrara Aquile (8-1) at Brescia Bengals (7-1)

In Italy's DIII/9FL, the Conference Semifinals were contested over these two days.

Three games on Saturday, one on Sunday

Northern Conference Semifinal #1
Castelfranco Cavaliers (6-0) vs.
Milano Rams (6-1)

Cavaliers with a robust victory

Northern Conference Semifinal #2
Trento Thunder (6-0) vs.
Piacenza Wolverines (5-2)

A dominant Trento performance

Southern Conference Semifinal #1
Roma Legionari (6-0) vs.
Cagliari Crusaders (6-1)

Sardinia's Crusaders take a good one

Southern Conference Semifinal #2
Catania Elephants (6-0) vs.
Bologna Doves (5-2)

Sicily's Elephants were too
much for the Doves

Elephants vs. Crusaders in an
all-island Southern Conference Final

The Nine Bowl is only one win
away for these four DIII/9FL teams

Week #4 action in the ELF

The Rhein Fire (3-1) knocked the
Paris Musketeers (2-1) from the
ranks of the undefeated

The Madrid Toros (3-0) remained undefeated
in beating the Cologne Centurions (1-2)

The Vienna Vikings are a
SERIOUS enterprise!

Vienna Vikings (4-0), in camo uniforms,
outlasted the Berlin Thunder (2-2)

A much needed win by the
Barcelona Dragons (2-2) against
the Helvetic Mercenaries (0-3)

Frankfurt Galaxy (1-2) beat the
hard luck Wroclaw Panthers (1-3)

One of two . . .

. . . Milano Seamen vs. Stuttgart Surge
pre-game posters this week

The woes continue for the
Seamen (1-3) who were manhandled
by the Surge (3-0)

The Tirol Raiders (3-1) beat the
Munich Ravens (2-2) in a key
Central Conference contest

As usual, the plucky Prague Lions won
this weeks ELF pre-game poster contest

Now if the Lions could just win a game,
Hamburg Sea Devils (2-1) over the
Prague Lions (0-4)

The Fehérvár Enthroners (0-3)
had the only ELF Bye in week #4

The Western Conference is looking
like it is the toughest in the ELF

ELF WEEK #5 GAMES

Milano Seamen (1-3) at Barcelona Dragons (2-2)
Tirol Raiders (3-1) at Helvetic Mercenaries (0-3)

ELF WEEK #5 BYES

I'm not seeing any real marquee match-ups in Week #5, how about you?

Now it is on to another week of
battling my deep, inner demons
