The Roaming Continues: Coos Bay, Oregon to Arcata, California

Monday, November 20, 2023

A good night's sleep was all that we needed before starting the next leg of our interesting journey.

The view from our Coos Bay Hotel
was a tranquil one

Laurie marveled at all of the
apples on this backyard tree

The first order of business was fulfilling Mike's request to have us drop by Marshfield H.S. where Steve Prefontaine was an alumnus to take a few photos.

Pirates and the Theater Arts
sound like a perfect match to me

Located across the street from
Marshfield H.S.

This could make for an interesting four years of high school.

It was a nice looking cemetery

Mission accomplished and photos sent, it was time for breakfast in nearby North Bend.

Mom's Kitchen is an old school operation

We were the only two non-locals in
Mom's Kitchen but everyone was
friendly and the food top notch

Cool building in North Bend

Coos Bay was still sleepy as we
headed south to Bandon, Oregon

Bandon has LOTS of wood
carvings like this big one

Laurie's efforts to bolster yet another
Oregon coastal city's economy started here

I liked the free display of
art by local school students

This chocolate shop got a few
of my retirement dollars

DAMN TEMPTING!

I loved Gene Wilder
as Willy Wonka

The view of Bandon's bay

Eerie octopus

Swarming Pelicans are a
deep rooted fear in all of us

Agree?

The view from Port Orchard, Oregon's
Battle Rock City Park

The bridge that links the communities
of Wedderburn and Gold Beach, Oregon

The Oregon Coast is one of
rugged beauty mile after mile

Gentle waves lapping
the Oregon shore

Another amazing view that
needs a . . .

. . . closer view

The lonely lighthouse in
Crescent City, California

We had no choice but to stop here

Paul Bunyan, his blue ox Babe
and little Laurie

Part of the Native American Museum
in the Trees of Mystery Museum

This ancient Native American symbol
is always disturbing

Southwestern tribes used this reverse swastika symbol as the sign of the whirling log that was a sacred image used in healing rituals.

A perfect headdress

Bigfoot claims another girlfriend

The Sun was setting so we needed a
place for the night in Arcata, California

We found it next to this fine dining
establishment which is as old as I am

Arcata's Main Square Park

Our night would be spent
comfortably at the Hotel Arcata

It is 108 years old this year

Our man at the Registration Desk
had a wealth of information about the
Hotel Arcata's history

It was built before the advent of
California's child labor laws

Thus the mistake in the mosaic floor that was made tile-by-tile by 6 year old workers back in the day.

Pizza for dinner as a perfect idea
at the eclectic spot

Can you name all of the people
in the Arcata Pizza's mural?

Funky food served by nice people

We even drank adult beverages
produced somewhat locally

DEEEElicious!

Aliens are all around us

Isn't that the Alien Guru from TV?

Some more thoughts about the UW 2023 football season . . .

The Dawgs have a proud, rich
football tradition

The last regular season slate
of games in PAC-12 history

Only 7-5 USC's regular season is done at this time.

Apple Cup on Saturday

GO DAWGS!
