A WET Game Day in Corvallis, Oregon

Saturday, November 18, 2023

It was a BEAUTIFUL, WET day for American football in the Pacific Northwest, so we spent the day preparing for what should be a great game in Corvallis, Oregon at 4:30 p.m. between our #5 ranked, 11-0 Washington Huskies and the home team, #11 ranked, 8-2 Oregon State Beavers.

The Beavers two losses were each by a mere three points.

It was going to be a good
one in everybody's opinion

In the company of Mark and Susie Johnson, we started our adventure at a reasonable hour.

Rain was in the forecast and, for once,
the meteorologists were 100% correct

Our Junction CityAirbnb looked
great in the clear, crisp morning

We opted to explore Junction City before starting the 30 minute drive to Corvallis.

I checked it out, Junction City is
located on the 44th Parallel thus
making it acceptable for Mexican food

Again, my rule of thumb is "Never eat Mexican food above the 45th Parallel."

Though closed in the morning, this spot now clearly had potential.

There was a Scandinavian crafts market going on in Junction City this morning, but where?

We guessed that this might be the spot

We were correct!

Mark nearly bought all of the cookies,
scones and loaves of bread seen here

Our car now full of loot, we proceeded to other day-to-day Junction City shops like . . .

. . . this one with everything that an
astute shopper might want

Mark and I went for a walk instead . . .

. . . where we found this 1904 steam
locomotive donated in 1958 to the people
of Oregon from the people of Finland

It is a Tk2s 2-8-0 broad gauge steam locomotive built in Tampere, Finland. It was powered by steam generated by the burning of wood.

On to Corvallis . . .

. . . where we found a street market
in progress where our restaurant
of choice resided

An Oregonian Cornucopia

What the heck?

Free range eggs was the #1 thing
on my morning shopping list, DAMN!

Our restaurant offered up a breakfast
burrito so big that I could not finish it

What the heck?

AMAZING Fall colors in
Corvallis this time of year

It was worth at least a look

More good looking veggies

Lots of leaves along the banks
of the Willamette River

Interesting sculpture,

I like old towns with modern murals

The Beavers Nation
was out in full force

Every single Oregon State fan that we met was proudly wearing orange. They were all equally polite and cordial with those of us in purple.

We were now heading to the OSU campus to visit their fabulous Beaver Team Store.

We parked near the Beavers
baseball stadium

Three National Championships in baseball by a "bad weather" college is truly amazing.

We met this young lady who was
firmly in touch with OSU football history

She also offered us some treats

Reser Stadium just steps away
from the Beavers Team Store

It really would be if
Oregon State won tonight

We entered the Team Store

Good looking road uniforms

The home ones look solid too

This rain hat did not fit me but . . .

. . . it was a PERFECT fit on Mark!

We joined a tailgate already in
progress hosted by the parents
of the Huskies' starting Sophomore
Right Tackle, #73, Roger Rosengarten
6'6", 330 lbs.

I left the group for about 20 minutes in search of an OSU campus sight that Michael and Jacob wanted me to see.

No, not the old Poultry Building

There it was, the Moon Tree

and find more about the Moon Tree

Finally, we headed into Reser Stadium,
Oregon State's 35,000 seat football palace

A massive Benny Beaver
greeted our arrival

Why was everyone wearing all
of their rain gear?

Oh . . .

It was still at least 30 minutes
before the Kickoff but the faithful
were in fully drenched support mode

The band is on the field

Tempting, Corvallis is still just
south of the 45th Parallel

Here come the Beavers!

Drop

Washington TD pass from
Michael Penix, Jr. to Rome Odunze

Note the the Beavers only rushed four defenders while seven Huskies stayed in to block. No wonder that Penix had so much time to throw.

At Halftime, it was Washington 22 - Oregon State 10.

The West Coast's first Heisman Trophy
winner was OSU's QB 61 years ago

Baker was also the first of only three Heisman Trophy winners to pass left handed.

TRIVIA QUESTION: Who were the other two?

The Beavers fought back in the
Third Quarter right in front of us

OSU mixed the run and the pass
remarkably well

How could they call this nice, polite
young UW DB for Pass Interference?

Here comes OSU's standout RB
Damien Martinez yet again

He had 26 carries for 123 yards and scored 2 TDs.

He scored his second
TD on this carry

Good Beavers pass protection

HANDS UP!

That the Huskies were shut out in the Second Half was disturbing to say the least.

Still, the Final score was all that mattered . . .

Washington (11-0) - 22
Oregon State (8-3) - 20

The Beavers three losses are now by a total of eight points.

The Huskies will be at home next Saturday for the annual Apple Cup Game against Washington State (5-6).

The Beavers will play in their annual Civil War rivalry game in Eugene on Friday against Oregon (10-1).

TRIVIA QUESTION ANSWER: The other two left handed, Heisman Trophy winning QBs were USC's Matt Leinart in 2004 and Florida's Tim Tebow in 2007.

Hey, there we are in the yellow
circle on the ABC broadcast of the game

Thanks to son Michael for sending us this photo from his TV feed.

We were wet but extremely
happy with the UW's narrow victory

GO HUSKIES!

Now it's on to Las Vegas for the
PAC-12 Championship Game vs.
either Oregon (10-1) or Arizona (8-3)
