More of Highland Park, Dominoes, American Football and BBQ Gold in Eagle Rock

Mon.-Thurs., May 29-June 1, 2023

By and large, just another normal few days featuring great food and fun Dominoes games with my Mother.

On Wednesday, before visiting my
Mom, I stopped this fine establishment
with BBQ firmly in my mind

Max City BBQ
4729 N. Eagle Rock Blvd.
Eagle Rock, CA

If I wasn't driving solo, some of those adult beverages would have been worth a try, but after all . . .

. . . I came for the BBQ!

The grilled cheese and pulled pork slider, half rack of baby back ribs, mac and cheese, cornbread muffin and some out of this world BBQ beans were all FANTASTIC!

Of course, I washed all down with a properly chilled Diet Coke.

If you are in the Eagle Rock area, GO HERE!

Thursday offered me another splendid lunch, this time an Italian meal back in Highland Park amidst lots of . . .

. . . Murals

Murals that were all colorful and
celebrated diverse topics

Interesting

Fearsome

Folliero's Italian Food and Pizza
5566 N. Figueroa St.
Highland Park. CA

An unassuming storefront that led to a good meal. I paired my lasagna and margherita pizza with a Diet Coke, great choices all the way around.

Still, I needed something more and I found it across the street.

Delicias Bakery and Some

Highland Park, CA

I ordered that Mexican favorite
that I first discovered a few years
ago in Mexico City on one of our
Europe Warriors sojourns,
Cafe de Olla

DELICIOUS!

As for the Dominoes Battles
with Mom . . .

Wednesday: I won both in Games 28-16 and in Points 355-154

Thursday: I won again, both in Games 19-13 and in Points 301-201

I'm getting better.

Why did we play far less games on Thursday, you ask?

Because it was Kitten Day
at the skilled nursing home

Our Dominoes Tournament had no chance against petting this kitten.

We'll try again on Friday.

On the American football front globally . . .

The Varese Skorpions young WR,
Matteo Mozzanica, was named the
IFL's MVP of the Week for his
efforts in the 42-7 victory over the
Milano Rhinos

The IFL's playoff bracket gives the
Top Two Seeds two weeks off as
a reward, sort of . . .

The IFL's #1 Seeded Parma Panthers
are playing a game this Saturday, this
schedule should read "6/3" not "6/31"

The Panthers will travel to Paris to take on the Flash de la Courneuve in the Semi-Finals of the Central European Football League Tournament on Saturday.

If the Panthers win, then they would play the winner of the Schwäbisch Hall Unicorns (Germany) vs. the Thonon Black Panthers (France) game sometime in July I suspect.

Our favorite European League of
Football team, the Barcelona Dragons,
start their third ELF season on Saturday

The Dragons will be hosting one of the ELF's 2023 expansion clubs, the Helvetic Guards that are coach by long-time college coach Norm Chow. The Guards are based in Zurich, Switzerland.

ELF Eastern Conference Predictions

ELF Central Conference Predictions

I strongly believe that the Dragons will not finish in the Central Conference cellar.

ELF Western Conference Predictions

The expansion Paris Musketeers are thought to be a force in their first season.

BIG Game in Switzerland
on Sunday in Thun

Our 2012 club was the Thun Tigers (5-1) who take on the traditional Swiss powerhouse Calanda Broncos (7-0). These are the top two teams in the top Swiss league, the SAFV's Nationalliga A.

These two teams met on May 21st with the Broncos steamrolling to a 52-31 victory.

The Egyptian League starts
its 2023 action this weekend

The Cairo Hellhounds are clearly my team of choice in this circuit.

The list of NCAA DI-FBS
Bowl Games has been announced

I stopped by the Barnes And Noble bookstore in Westlake Village today and purchased a pair of college football pre-season magazines.

Athlon Sports College Football magazine predicts that our beloved Washington Huskies of the PAC-12 will play in Atlanta's Peach Bowl against the SEC's LSU Tigers.

While Lindy's Sports College Football magazine also thinks that the Huskies will earn a spot in a quality bowl game, they predict that it will be in Glendale, Arizona's Fiesta Bowl against the American Athletic Conference's University of Texas-San Antonio Roadrunners.

I guess that we should play the games first before getting too excited.

Finally, on a personal note . . .

The Brazilian National Team
will be playing again soon!

I will be the Brasil Onças Special Teams Coach for the upcoming America's Tournament scheduled for late November-early December in Brasília against National Teams from Chile, Colombia and Panama.

Thus I decided to make my coaching assignment a bit easier this week by . . .

. . . by signing up for Portuguese language
lessons via the Babbel app

Above are the flag of Brazil behind the flag of Portugal.

The 1494 Treaty of Tordesillas created the Line of Demarcation that arbitrarily divided the "New World" between superpowers Spain and Portugal based on a North-South line running about 100 leagues (345 miles) west of the Cape Verde Islands off of the northwest coast of Africa.

Spain was given all of the land west of this line, Portugal would control all lands east of the line.

In 1506, the Line of Demarcation was moved another 270 leagues (932 miles) west thus giving all of the territory of what is now the country of Brazil to Portugal. This is the reason why Brazil speaks Portuguese while the rest of South America uses Spanish as their language of choice.

Thus I will be adding some level of Portuguese language skill to my arsenal of varying Spanish, English, Italian linguistic skills.

Sorry to say that much of the little Swedish, German and French that I learned while coaching in the wonderfully rural Swedish cities of Hässleholm and Upplands-Väsby, the gorgeous Swiss alpine city of Thun and the historic metropolis of Lyon, France, no longer exists on any recognizable proficiency level.

A sad case of use it or lose it.
