A Busy Weekend Working on the Computer

Fri.-Sun., June 2-4, 2023

We have lots of American football news to report, both foreign and domestic.

We'll start in Spain where the Barcelona Dragons started their third season of operation in the European League of Football, the Continent's Super League.

A GREAT win at home over
Zurich, Switzerland's Helvetic Guards

I'm so happy to see Bart Iaccarino's team getting off to a good start again this season.

While the start of the Summer long Pan-European ELF season was finally upon us, the various Spring national leagues and tournaments were winding down.

The Central European Football League
played its Semi-Final games on Saturday

CEFL Tournament Semi-Final Results
Saturday, June 3, 2023
La Courneuve Flash 26
Parma Panthers 21

Thonon Black Panthers 42
Schwäbisch Hall Unicorns 14

The single elimination CEFL Tournament started back on April 22nd with a total of 12 teams representing the nine countries of Finland, France (2 teams), Germany, Hungary, Italy (2 teams), Serbia, Spain (2 teams), Sweden and Switzerland vying for the Championship Trophy.

On Saturday, Italy's Parma Panthers and Germany's defending CEFL Champion Schwäbisch Hall Unicorns were dispatched by the Flash, located in Paris, and the Black Panthers based in the French city of Thonon-les-Bains on the south shore of Lake Geneva.

Thus, it will be an all French CEFL Championship Game on June 24th at a site not yet announced.

Our 2012 team, Switzerland's
DI Thun Tigers played on Sunday

Unfortunately, the now 5-2 Tigers lost 54-17 to the traditional Swiss powerhouse club, the Calanda Broncos, who are a perfect 8-0 in Swiss play this season.

One more week until the Varese Skorpions
take on the Milano Rhinos again, this
time in an IFL DI Wild Card Playoff Game

The game will be played in Varese just as it was a week ago when these two clubs, both now sporting 4-4 records, faced off in the IFL's final regular season game, a 42-7 Skorpions victory.

By virtue of that win, the Skorpions are the #4 Seed and the Rhinos are the #5 Seed in the Playoffs on Sunday, June 11th. The winner of this Wild Card game will travel to Parma to play the #1 Seeded Panthers (7-1) in the IFL Semi-Finals. Yes, the same Parma Panthers that lost the CEFL Semi-Final game on Saturday 26-21 to Paris' La Courneuve Flash.

The #3 Seeded Ancona Dolphins (6-2) will host the #6 Seeded Lazio Ducks (3-5) in the other Wild Card game on Saturday, June 10th. The winner of this game will head to Florence to take on the #2 Seeded Firenze Guelfi (7-1).

The Semi-Final games will take place on either Saturday or Sunday, June 17th or 18th.

As for me, my Skorpions work week was filled with the finishing of my analytics breakdown of our first Rhinos game and the overall season breakdown of what is and is not working in the Varese Kicking Game, Defense and Offense. It led to some good discussions with some of our coaches.

The Semi-Finals winners will
literally punch their tickets to
Italian Bowl XLII
to be played in Toledo, Ohio

We'll close this post on a personal American football note.
Our 11 year old Grandson Jacob
is playing Pop Warner football
again for the local eleven, the
Camarillo Stingers

Jacob's Dad, Michael, has already committed to being an assistant coach with Jacob's "Sophomore" Stingers team in 2023.

Both Jacob and Michael had urged me to join them as a coach since I would probably be at 99% of the practices and games anyway.

On Friday, I met with Stingers "Sophomore" team Head Coach Ron McCown at the local Starbucks to talk about the team and to see if there was a role for me with the club.

The bottom line is that the Stingers now have a new coach to help them on the Offensive side of the ball and with the Kicking Game.

As Gene Autry would say . . .

I'll be working on the team's playbook the next few days as well as getting re-certified to coach.

The Circle of Life continues . . .
