The Will of the People

Mon.-Mon., June 12-19, 2023

I received a message from Julien Urgenti via Lyon, France today stating simply . . .

"The people need a blog update."

My even simpler response was "OK."

Things went along in a fairly routine manner with my Mother beating me at Dominoes on my three visits during the week.

Friday was a bit more exciting.

Before visiting my Mother,
I dined at this fine establishment
in the Lincoln Heights district of L.A.

Their "Thicc Burger" was GOOD!
(Yes, it's with two ccs)

Moo's Craft BBQ and Taproom
2118 N. Broadway
Los Angeles, CA 90031

Open Thursdays-Sundays
Noon to 7:00 p.m. or when Sold Out
whichever comes first

Grandnephew Max celebrated his
10th birthday on Friday

The Los Angeles Rams Cooper Kupp jersey that we gave him was a BIG hit.

Friday was also the day for the 10th
Anniversary gathering of our 2013
Bron-Villeurbanne Falcons
French National Championship DIII team

Those crazy Falcons had a good time
as near as I could tell, I just wish that
I could have joined them

Over two days this week, before they went to school, Jacob and Mary proudly shared their newest favorite movie with us, Nacho Libre.

Before going to Moo's Craft BBQ and taproom on Friday, I stopped by Olvera Street and found them their very own . . .

Mexican Wrestling masks ala Nacho Libre

The only problem was that once they donned their masks, I could not for the life of me figure which one was Mary and which one was Jacob.

Those masks are super effective disguises!

The wrestling masks off, they
enjoyed digging in our backyard
dirt creating a small city

Future urban planners have to start somewhere.

On Father's Day, Kevin and Andrew

Nations League Finals soccer game

Now, some scenes from a Monday
spent in artsy Ojai, California

Nice Ojai fountain

A medium cup of the Ojai Coffee Roasting
Company's lavender latte hit the spot

There was lots to report from EuroBall action this past weekend . . .

Our old club, the Catania Elephants (5-1)
had a Southern Conference Semi-Final
DIII Italian playoff game against the
Formigine Honey Badgers (5-2)

No Contest!

The Conference Finals are set for
Saturday, June 24th

Northern Conference Finals
Brescia Bengals (7-0)
at
Castelfranco Cavaliers (7-0)

Southern Conference Final
Pesaro Angels (6-1)
at
Catania Elephants (6-1)

The two Conference Champions will play in the Italian National Championship DIII Game, a.k.a., Nine Bowl XXIII on July 7th.

Speaking of Italian Playoff games . . .

The DI Semi-Finals were
contested over the weekend

As it clearly states on this huge
sign in New York City's Times Square,
the winners will play in Italian Bowl XLII
in Toledo, Ohio on July 1st

The defending champion and #2 seeded
Firenze Guelfi had an easy time of it on
Saturday punching their ticket to Toledo by
cruising past the #3 seeded Ancona Dolphins

Sunday's other DI Semi-Final featured our beloved Varese Skorpions who were doing a full court press in their preparations.

Drew Davis tore a calf muscle in Game #1
of the Skorpions and missed the rest of
the campaign

After leaving Varese, somehow his rehab included playing a full season for a team in Mexico whose season ended last week.

Voilà, he was magically ready to rumble against the Guelfi!

The Skorpions roster changes were not finished just yet. In last week's game the Varese QB was knocked out of the game just before halftime and had to be taken to the hospital.

He would not be able to play this week and the Skorpions really don't have a back-up QB.

What to do?

Just sign a Dual Passport
(USA/Italian) QB of course

Luke Casey had been the Lazio Ducks QB in 2021 and 2022 and was available.

He arrived in Varese on Saturday, practiced just that day and was good to go for the Semi-Final on Sunday.

I think.

When these two clubs met in the regular season, the #1 Seeded Parma Panther (7-1) defeated the #4 Seeded Varese Skorpions (5-4), 24-0 on April 1st.

At the Half, the Skorpions led 13-7!

I was both surprised and hopeful at this point.

Then the Panthers woke up, winning the Third Quarter 20-0 and never looking back.

The better team won,
simple as that

I'm thinking that our old friend, #21 Nicolas Principi, may be Hitting a Defenseless Player on this one.

Both illegal and not nice!

#1 Parma Panthers (8-1)
vs.
#2 Firenze Guelfi (8-1)
in Toledo on July 1st

On April 22nd, the Panthers beat the Guelfi in Firenze, 25-7, in their regular season match-up.

The Central European Football
League Championship game will
be played in Paris next Saturday
between two French teams

La Courneuve Flash
vs.
Thonon Black Panthers

Then we have Week #3 of the
European League of Football to review

The biggest takeaway from the Week #3 games is that the teams are quickly starting to separate themselves into the haves and have nots.

Meanwhile, in Japan . . .

I could not agree more!

Now, as for my latest attempt to coach again, this time with the Camarillo Stingers Pop Warner League club, I must sadly report that upon reflection I decided not to coach with the Stingers this season.

I just did not feel that I was a good fit for the program at this time.
