The Maui Winery Run on a Pleasant, Laid Back Sunday

Sunday, May 16, 2021

It was a peaceful, easy going kind of day, perfect for a sumptuous breakfast and a drive once again to Maui's Upcountry on the Haleakala volcano eastern side of our island paradise.

We started the day at our new favorite breakfast spot in Kihei, the Piko Cafe. We were joined by Mark's cousin Chris Campbell and his wife Jenny for yet another round of HEC sandwiches on a delicious brioche and a stack of Ube pancakes.

I am definitely growing used to these two amazing local treats.

We returned to the condo before heading out on our next adventure where I again noticed . . .

. . , this interesting reflection
seen every morning off of the
Johnsons' balcony

Nothing special I know, I just like the symmetry of it.

We were off once again to Upcountry's . . .

Maui Wine Tasting Room

It was located on some beautiful
land that was formerly the
Ulupalakua Ranch

A nice statue garden greeted us was we entered the winery's grounds.

Of course the winery has a cannon

The cannon was used by Captain James Make from 1856-1879 to fire salutes from Keekiahia Hill, where the winery now sits, to ships anchored below in Makena Bay.

That's a big, old tree

Back in the day, this was a jail on
the old Ulupalakua Ranch property

I'm not sure why they needed a jail on the ranch but Mark and I believe . . .

. . . that this is where they tossed
the bodies after executions

No one seemed to know for sure but I think that we might be on to one of Maui's hidden, deep dark secrets here.

A ranch specialty

The man in charge of the old
ranch sat here as well

It is Paniolo Country after all

In case you forgot, paniolo is the Hawaiian word for cowboy and the Upcountry still has lots of cattle and horses roaming about.

Leaving an offering to
a local god is a good idea

That fun loving rascal
General George S. Patton
used to hang out at ranch

What is a more Hawaiian symbol
than a beautiful hibiscus flower?

Yes, our visit to the Maui Winery
was definitely a TD for us

Across the street from the Maui Winery
was another fun shop . . .

. . . the old Ranch Store

Mark and Susie hanging out
with some local ranch hands

A couple of miles down the road
we stopped again

This time for a GREAT cup of coffee
at this quaint coffee house

Do they grow their own
coffee beans?

They definitely had their
own banana palm in the
front of the store

The Sunshine Girls gleefully
sporting their new, matching
Maui Winery tank tops in the
evening just before another
glorious Hawaiian Sunset

It was indeed another fine day in the 50th state!
