Our Last Day in Hawai'i

Tuesday, May 18, 2021

Finally, after two wonderful weeks, it was time to pack our bags and head back to the mainland.

Still, we had the better part of the day to enjoy Maui one more time before boarding our redeye Alaska Airlines flight back to Los Angeles at 10:40 p.m.

Here I am chasing Mark on our
ritualistic early morning walk

We covered 2.6 miles round trip as we explored the posh resort of Wailea again before it got too hot.

There are some ornate gates
protecting some of the fabulous homes

Keawakapu Beach was serene . . .

. . . in both directions at this hour

I love these signs that tell you
what you'll likely see at the beach

In the case of Keawakapu Beach, look out for coral and octopi.

A lone jogger in the early morning cool

The island of Kaho'olawe is in for
a fight sometime soon I think

For decades, the U.S. Government used this uninhabited island to test munitions. As a result, besides the damage that the majority of these munitions caused, where there are still potentially several live, unexploded rounds that need to be swept from Kaho'olawe before any native Hawaiians can both reclaim and, more importantly, repopulate the island.

After our walk, Laurie, Susie and I headed to the beach in front of the Johnson Compound one last time.

The water was perfectly refreshing

How can we ever properly thank
Mark and Susie Johnson for
including us in yet another adventure?
