What to Do on a Rainy, Windy Day in Maui?

Wednesday, December 19, 2018

We awoke to our first, and hopefully only, bad weather day of our Maui adventure. It had rained throughout night and we were experiencing strong winds throughout the morning.

Thus we all stayed indoors for most of the morning waiting for the Category 36 winds to die down.

When I opened my Facebook account I was a both saddened and proud to see . . .

. . . this photo of Jacob as a gold
bearing Magi in the Santa Clara
Elementary School Christmas Pageant

He is seen here following the famed Bethlehem Star in search of the Baby Jesus who just happened to be at the foot of the altar at the end of this aisle.

Sadly we missed one of his yuletide school pageants for the first time due to our Maui trip. Clearly poor planning on our part.

This photo and a video of his perforce that Mike and Vanessa sent us helped to reduce our shared anxiety over not being there for Jacob's masterful performance.

Finally, when the weather broke in the afternoon, we were off to do, what else, a little shopping in the former plantation village of Pa'ia.

While the ladies shopped, Mark and
I ducked in here to watch part of the
Frisco Bowl between Ohio (8-4) and
San Diego State (7-5)

The Happy Hour food was good and the drinks were cold.

As for the game, it was a blowout with Ohio cruising to a 27-0 victory.

For some vague reason our restaurant
had a certain surfing culture atmosphere

And Mick Jagger was in the house too!

I was posing next to a
BIG surfboard as it turns out

Amazingly, Laurie did not go
into this interesting store

The Pa'ia area is known for being one off Maui's prime surfing areas so we opted to see if anyone was brave enough take on the storm surf.

Ho'okipa Point

While the waves were not huge, the sea was indeed rough looking with a reportedly strong current happy to give you a quick ride to Tahiti.

We did see one, and only one, surfer brave or dumb enough to go out on a day like this.

He was still alive and looking for the day's perfect wave when we left.

Do NOT surf into those rocks!

One last look at the rainbow

The Pa'ia Mantokuji Soto Zen Mission

It was like something out of the 1960s John Wayne movie, Donovan's Reef.

We were now headed for Maui's UpCountry region for further exploration purposes.

Holy Ghost Mission in Kula

It is a Catholic Church as it turns out. YEA US!

Why were we in UpCountry Kula
you ask?

Although this landmark Kula market,
the Morihara Store that opened in 1948
was interesting, it was not the reason

Neither was this site that is now
a part of the Morihara Store building

Nope, the iconic Waiakoa Gym
wasn't the reason either

The Kula Bistro and an impending
GREAT dinner were indeed our
voyage's goal

It looks like we would not
be disappointed!

OH MY!

If you ever come to UpCountry Maui,
The Kula Bistro is THE spot!

The Kula Bistro does not sell alcohol but they are fine with you bringing your own adult beverages and not charging you a corkage fee. This is a big economic boost to the Morihara Store located just across the street from the Kula Bistro.

My seafood linguine and Laurie's seafood risotto were both amazing.

As for the three desserts that we all shared, again, OH MY!

The Kula Bistro is located at 4566 Lower Kula Road in the village of Kula. Their phone number is 808-871-2960.

Believe us, it is worth the drive!
