Mariners Flag Football Sunday and Lots of Zaragoza Game Photos

Sunday, February 2, 2025
To my lovely bride, Laurie, I wish a HAPPY . . .

GROUNDHOG DAY!

In the late 1960s, when we were still in our courting stages at the University of Washington, the two of us opted for a somewhat radical departure from the traditional Valentine's Day festivities of February 14th.

We decided to instead celebrate our devotion to each other on February 2nd, Groundhog Day.

For one, the groundhog is a lovable looking rodent. More importantly we found that on Groundhog Day flowers were much less expensive and that restaurants were less crowded often offering dishes at lesser prices as well.

We've been happily exchanging gifts on February 2nd for 57 years now!

Funny

SACRILEGE!

Our late night revelry after the Zaragoza win yesterday spilled over into the need for an early morning wake up call as our Mariners five-on-a-side flag teams were playing three games at Las Mestas Stadium today starting at the ungodly hour of 10:00 a.m.

It was raining when I
arrived at Las Mestas

The first game saw our Mariners Junior
squad playing the Oviedo Madbulls

As about half of our Junior team both played in yesterday's Zaragoza game and were out until the wee hours of the morning after our team's celebratory dinner, I questioned what they had left in their collective tanks for their lone contest of the day.

The games today were played in a steady downpour from start to finish.

The Madbulls led 8-0 at the half before opening the game wide open after the intermission.

The Final Score was Madbulls 30 - Mariners (1-1) 0.

Up next at 11:30 a.m., it was a Youth game,
Gijón Mariners vs. the Oviedo Phoenix

It was the first of three Youth games to be played today.

Our team is made up of boys and girls under 14 years of age. The youngest player is Simon aged eight. He is also my favorite player to coach on this team.

One big Neutral Zone

This wound up being a great TD
play for the Mariners

It must be noted that blocking is not allowed in Flag Football.

In their first game, the Mariners (1-0) hung on to edge the Phoenix, 19-18.

After two hours standing in the rain and learning that our Zaragoza game video had been posted on Hudl for viewing and analyzing, I opted to head back to the apartment.

In doing so, I missed watching the Youth game at 12:30 p.m. between the Oviedo Phoenix and Valladolid Penguins. I do not know the result of that game.

I also missed the 1:30 p.m. Youth contest between the Mariners and the Penguins. Team President Kiké Prado Alonso informed me of the game's Final Score, Mariners (2-0) 25 - Penguins 12.

Besides American football and rugby, our stadium is also used for horse show jumping spectaculars in the Summer.

As hoped for, Mariners Team Photographer Felipe posted great photos of yesterday's Zaragoza Hurricanes victory.

HERE COME THE MARINERS!

RB/Warhorse Casta

Working as One!

The crowd was into the game

Captains Out!

devastating pancake block

The Hurricanes QB was tough to tackle

So was this Zaragoza receiver

Burly Mariners Center Mikel

Calde made this catch but paid
a big price for his trouble

After three games, I know one thing about Calde, he is definitely NOT afraid to go over the middle.

FEARLESS!

Such an uplifting block

HAND UP!

SURROUND HIM!

Zaragoza's QB was always a threat with his legs.

I don't think that Casta got to this one

A simple completed five yard hitch and a missed Hurricanes tackle that turned into . . .

GAME OVER, MARINERS WIN!

Emotions ran high after the game

Wins are hard to come by in any sport, on any continent or in any country but our good practices laid the ground work for this one to be sure.

Lots of hugs after the win

Injured DE Jonathan even gave me one

He has missed the last two games but might be ready for the Osos Rivas game in Madrid in two weeks.

Getting him back would be HUGE!

About to enjoy the warm
afterglow of Victory

I'm just saying that watching the Chiefs-Eagles Super Bowl this coming weekend with the Mariners viewing party at the Carlingoal Sports Bar & Restaurant is a better economic choice than . . .

. . . going to Super Bowl LIX
in New Orleans

I hope that you all had a . . .

GREAT GROUNDHOG DAY!
