Another Interesting Week in Paradise

Mon.-Fri., September 11-15, 2023

Lest we forget . . .

Monday was the 22nd Anniversary
of the infamous 9/11 attacks on America

We were going to go to the
Padres-Dodgers game Monday night
with Joanne and Paul Sabolic but . . .

The MLB app electronic ticket sending gods were against us.

No tickets ever arrived so we went to Plan B, another meal at the fabulous Granville restaurant in artsy North Hollywood.

Plan B was a darn good one!

The Dominoes Tournament with
my Mother continued this week

We are now five months into this highly competitive weekly affair that has seen us battle for 51 days at her skilled nursing home in Pasadena.

During this time, there have been a total of 1,867 Dominoes games contested.

The official tournament scoreboard reads as follows:

GAMES WON
I lead 940-924-3

POINTS SCORED
I lead 15,472 to 15,398

My slim 16 game, 74 point leads can be wiped out in a single day.

I must stay super sharp and on guard against my experienced, crafty opponent.

On to American football news . . .

WE'RE #8!

Varese Skorpions Head Coach
Nick Holt is part of the Abilene
Christian staff this Fall

The 2-0 Abilene Christian Wildcats hosts the 1-1 Incarnate Word Cardinals on Saturday.

BIG home opener for the
Rams on Sunday

The 49ers have owned the regular season games between these two clubs over the last five seasons.

Historically, this in-state rivalry series that started in 1950 sees the 49ers in the lead 77-68-3.

Go Rams GO!

The ELF playoffs continue
this coming weekend

#3 seeded, 11-2 Stuttgart Surge
at #2 seeded, 12-0 Vienna Vikings
on Saturday

#4 seeded, 11-2 Frankfurt Galaxy
at #1 seeded, 12-0 Rhein Fire
on Sunday

The winners will play in the ELF's third Championship Game the following weekend.

Sad news from the Barcelona Dragons

General Manager Bart Iaccarino has resigned after three seasons with Catalonia's ELF club.

Bart is a EuroBall legend, a great family man and one of the very best men that I have met during all of my overseas, American football coaching related experiences.

My guess is that he will be back on the sidelines sometime soon.

Whatever club lands him in any capacity will be fortunate to have this knowledgable, hard working coach on their sideline.

Time for another Friday Night Lights experience . . .

Channel Islands H.S. Raiders
0-3 overall, 0-1 Channel League

at

Buena H.S. Bulldogs
1-3 overall, 1-1 Channel League

There were no big glamour games near us this week, so we opted to go see our good friend Ryan Bolland's Buena team in action.

pre-game catch along the sidelines

Her come . . .

. . . the Bulldogs!
"Row the Boat"

The first of many Buena Kickoffs

A quick Bulldogs TD gave Buena
a 7-0 lead seconds into the game

When I first started coaching in Ventura County back in 1970, Channel Islands was an absolute powerhouse under Ventura County Sports Hall of Fame Coach Joel Gershon.

While the 1970s and 1980s were great for Raiders football fans, the past decade has been extremely tough for this south Oxnard school.

The overall record for C.I. football from 2014 through the first four games of 2023 is just 19-70-0.

Worse yet is the Raiders record the past five seasons, including the first four games of 2023, a mark of merely 2-37-0.

How the mighty have fallen . . .

The Raiders only had 26 players suited out and played in a completely uncompetitive fashion from the start.

I was glad to see Buena HC Ryan Bolland do everything he could to not embarrass the undermanned Raiders including agreeing to a running clock in the First Quarter.

At the end of the First Quarter, Buena led 28-0.

We left at the Half with the Bulldogs ahead 34-0.

Final Score
Buena (2-3, 2-1 CL) - 40
Channel Islands (0-4, 0-2 CL) - 0

Next up is Jacob's Pop Warner game on Saturday. Can't wait!
