Europe Warriors Women's Team Day I: Arrival in Mexico City

Sunday, December 1, 2019

Finally, the Europe Warriors Women's team was arriving in Mexico City after a 12 hour flight from Madrid. That was the good news.

The bad news was that their plane landed in the capital of Mexico at 5:00 a.m.!

I left my hotel at 7:00 a.m
to meet the team for breakfast

As you can see from this schedule,
it is going to be a BUSY week for
the Warriors

Our spot for breakfast today

Sleepy, happy Warriors
at breakfast

It is the Casa de Los Abuelos
after all

 Breakfast and hair braiding
naturally go together

FS Sylvie Aibeche hails from both
France and Italy (long story)
and also plays for a Women's team,
the Majestics, in Seattle, Washington

After breakfast it was time
for a light practice

Damn, it was such a BEAUTIFUL day for American football.

Since we could not check into our hotel until about 3:30 p.m., our team had to search through their luggage for their helmets and cleats.

In a first for me, one of our ladies asked me if she should wear her sports bra.

Whatever makes you feel safe was my reply.

Our game field next Saturday

Good natural turf field

Welcome!

The Estadio Wilfrido Massieu
is home to the IPN Burros Blancos

Near our practice field

 Also near our practice field

The coolest looking helmet decal
sported by a member of the Mexican
team that was getting ready to practice
on the field next to us

 Warriors milling around . . .

. . . making sure everything
fits just right

Warm-ups

The Mexican National Women's team

That's the team we play next Saturday.

Defensive Line Drills

Post practice discussion

We only practiced for about 45 minutes stressing fundamentals so that we could evaluate their skills.

I've never seen so many
hammer throw hammers at
one time

They were part of the equipment needed for the track meet going on in the stadium this morning.

After the workout, we went to a local mall.

Christmas in CDMX

The mall has an ice rink

FS Freya Kleine from Germany
wanted her picture with Santa

Since she is a Warrior, I did not charge her.

Laurie and I loved Sanborns when
we honeymooned in CDMX in 1971

The mall has an American Football store

Shop 'til you drop

Good store!

DB Hannah Ploskonka who is
from Detroit but lives and plays
in Helsinki made some new friends

We sat together on the bus today. When I asked what she does for a living, her response was . . .
"I build satellites."

Another first for me today.

I think that the Warriors helped
the local economy today

As for the coaches, we needed to try the local cuisine.

The place across the street from
the mall looked interesting

Two tacos al pastor for 15 pesos

One gringa for 25 pesos

This antipasto if you will, cost us 40 pesos each which is about $2 USD.

Just dream of it, a taco stand on every corner of the USA some day.

Feeling good, it was now time for the team to eat their lunch.

Good pursuit drill to Los Amigos

DANGER!

That green salsa was
EN FUEGO!

Warriors trying horchata

German WR Christin Hecker was
excited about her taco experience

Now we were getting serious!

A religious shrine at a taco stand
in CDMX is a MUST!

TRUE!

Time to register at the hotel

The view out of the Grand Prix Hotel

A Nativity scene in the lobby

It's that time of the year.

A round of meetings before
dinner and bedtime

It definitely felt good too get started with a group of positive, eager players that wanted to learn!

Stay tuned . . .
